Fry's Family Foods make plant-based alternatives to popular products such as burgers, chicken nuggets and sausages. They also make meat-free pies, sausage rolls, and chicken and beef style strips for stir-fry's! They use minimal ingredients with the main ingredient being vegetable protein. They are also super affordable and easy and quick to cook.
I love that you could also take these sorts of products to your non-vegan friend's or family BBQ and you wouldn't feel like the odd one out.
Here is a few of their products that I have tried.
Stockists: Morrisons, Ocado, Holland & Barrett, Whole Foods.
Braai Style Sausages
These were pretty much the same texture as a regular sausage and had a very similar taste! I did kind of feel like I was eating a sausage. It was delicious. Normally I can get grossed out eating meat substitutes but I didn't at all with these. I had these with broccoli, peas and mashed potato and made my own kind of gravy with red onion and mushrooms and ketchup on the side and it all went so well together! I never thought I would be eating a meal like that again. I would definitely eat these again. These would be great to take to a BBQ! I would love to trick my friends and family and see if they notice!
These taste similar to the chicken nuggets/burgers (below) but without the crumbs. These have more of a softer texture. I liked the texture but I felt like I wanted it to be a bit firmer. These tasted really good as a stir-fry. The flavour was really nice and it was great to have something different in my stir-fry. It doesn't have a strong flavour and kind of blended in with the other flavours but it was yummy! I followed the cooking instructions and added a sauce blend of tamari, sweet chilli sauce, lemon juice, agave, garlic granules, paprika and black pepper. It was delish!
Soy & Flaxseed Schnitzels
Ok this tasted pretty damn good. This was a bit firmer so it greatly resembled a chicken schnitzel. Nice texture and lovely flavours. There is coriander in this so I was a bit scared that I would taste it, but you can't taste the coriander at all. I actually kind of felt like I was eating chicken with this one.
These pretty much have the same taste and texture as the chicken-style nuggets (below), but obviously made for burgers. But I did find that this maybe had a better flavour or "meaty" similarity to chicken. I put a twist on these and cut them into strips and put them in a wrap with avocado, hummus, tomato, cucumber, red pepper, baby spinach and some ketchup and it tasted really good. It was kind of a subtle flavour blended in with all the other ingredients and it grossed me out less.
They smell good out of the oven. These are pretty similar to regular chicken nuggets. They have the same sort of texture touch and taste wise. They don't taste exactly the same but they are pretty yummy. My boyfriend and his non-vegan Nan loved them! These go great with ketchup. These would be great for kids, and for parties. I sometimes get a bit grossed out eating meat-free substitutes but every now and then I don't mind them!
