Plantasy Foods Mac 'n Cheez

31 Oct 2019

Plantasy Foods sell vegan 'Mac 'n Cheez' that you can make, ready in minutes! They come in four different flavours, you just add water in a pan as instructed on the packet, add your Mac 'n Cheez mix, stir, wait a few minutes and it's as easy as that! They also sell 'Cheez Sprinkles' for an extra sprinkling of 'cheez' or to top on other savoury or pasta dishes.

They are vegan and free from gluten, nuts and soy. What I love about this Mac 'n Cheez is that it's like a fast food option but made with wholesome, healthy ingredients! So when you're feeling like a bit of 'comfort food', it's actually still healthy for you and leaves you feeling light!

This brand originates in Australia but now sells in the UK! You can shop on their website (delivery only within Australia), or on Amazon UK, The Vegan Kind, Crazy-Bean Marketplace, Little Shop of Vegans (Norwhich), Artisan Pantry (Worthing) and at other local independent stores around the UK.

They are also launching in Planet Organic this November!

They sell for £4.89 each.

1. Original Cheez

Ingredients: gluten free pasta (60%) (brown rice flour, white rice flour), coconut milk powder, nutritional yeast, chickpea miso (rice, chickpeas, salt), tapioca, garlic, salt.

I cooked this for 8 mins and let sit for around 10-15 minutes, trying to thicken in up. It got thick but still not as thick as I would have hoped but it was still really delicious!! Perfect balance of sweet and salty. It was creamy. Great with avocado or ketchup, I had a bit of both! I ate around 3/4 of the packet and I feel that was enough. Easily shared between two with a side salad and if you're super hungry you could probably eat the whole packet! It's nice and light on the stomach which I love. I could tell it's made with coconut just a little bit but only with the first few bites but it's still a delicious taste. It's not super thick and cheesy like 'normal' mac n' cheese but still a delicious alternative. I love that it's made with wholesome ingredients and that it's gluten-free, hence why it is light on the stomach.

3. Cheez 'n Chive

Ingredients: gluten free pasta (60%) (brown rice flour, white rice flour), coconut milk powder, nutritional yeast, chickpea miso (rice, chickpeas, salt), tapioca, garlic, salt, chives.

Same delicious flavour to the Original. I couldn't actually taste any coconut flavour in this one or the packets after so maybe is was only the very first few bites. You can see plenty of chive bits throughout but it's a very subtle flavour. I think adding 2 cups of water instead of 2.5 to the pan actually makes it a bit thicker and 3/4 of a cup was plant-based milk, which I think also made it thicker! Coconut or soy milk I think would work the best. So you can try adding 1/2 - 1 cup of the liquid as plant-based milk if you want it thicker. I cooked it for around 8-10 minutes and let it sit for 10 minutes and it was great consistency. If you are someone who loves pasta and mac n' cheese but also loves to eat healthy, wholesome food then you have hit the jackpot!

2. Porcini Cheez

Ingredients: gluten free pasta (60%) (brown rice flour, white rice flour), coconut milk powder, nutritional yeast, chickpea miso (rice, chickpeas, salt), tapioca, garlic, salt, kibbled dried mushroom.

Same flavour. Salty but not too salty. It doesn't really have a mushroom flavour, there are tiny mushroom bits in the mixture but again, they don't really have much flavour. I wish the mushroom flavour was more prominent and that they were bigger but the mix starts as a dry mix so the mushrooms have to be dried. Still delicious though! I ate half the packet and saved half for the next night and had it with some salad and BBQ baked tofu for some added protein.

4. Chilli Cheez

Ingredients: gluten free pasta (60%) (brown rice flour, white rice flour), coconut milk powder, nutritional yeast, chickpea miso (rice, chickpeas, salt), tapioca, garlic, bell pepper, salt, chilli flakes.

Don't worry this one isn't overly chilli, I would say it's mild. It does get a bit more chilli as you keep taking bites though. There are small red bell pepper bits/chilli flakes throughout. The flavour it still delicious but for some reason I preferred the others over this one, and I don't mind mild chilli. Chilli lovers will love this one!

5. Cheez Sprinkles

Ingredients: rice crumbs, maize starch, coconut milk powder, nutritional yeast, onion powder, Australian chickpea miso (rice, chickpeas, salt), garlic, turmeric.

This mix is more like a powder form. It's pretty much the same as the other Mac 'n Cheez packets but without the pasta so it's more versatile! According to the pack you can use this to make cheese toast, toss with potatoes before baking, sprinkle on soups, toss with pasta to make a cheesy pasta and more! I tossed this with some potatoes before baking and it made them taste cheesy, flavourful and delicious. I only used a small-ish amount so it was a subtle flavour and still yum!
